When Old Insulation Has to Go

Old insulation removal is not needed on every job. Dry, clean insulation can usually stay, and we add on top after sealing. Removal makes sense when the material is wet from a roof leak, moldy, packed with mouse or squirrel droppings, smoke-damaged, or so thick over the ceiling that we cannot reach the leaks under it.

How we remove it

We use a high-powered insulation vacuum that runs a hose from a truck or collection unit to the attic, so the material leaves through bags without being carried through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. Once the attic floor is clear, we can seal every bypass and start over with clean fill.

Vermiculite is a different job

Some older attics have vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown loose fill. Some vermiculite contains asbestos, so we do not disturb it. If we see it, we stop and recommend testing and, if needed, a licensed abatement contractor before any other work.

Spray foam removal

Foam that was sprayed in the wrong place, never cured right or covers a problem has to be cut and scraped off. It is slower and costs more than removing loose fill. We look at it first and give you a written price.

Old Insulation Removal Questions

Why are people removing spray foam insulation?

Usually because it was put in the wrong spot, such as on a roof deck that now needs inspection, or because a bad mix left an odor. It is cut and scraped out, which takes time. We look first and price it in writing.

How much does it cost to remove attic insulation?

HomeAdvisor lists removal at $1 to $2 per square foot, with a typical job around $600 to $1,200. Removal plus replacement averages about $1,852 in its data.

Do I need to remove insulation after mice?

If the insulation is full of droppings or nesting, removing it lets us clean, seal entry points and start fresh.

What if my attic has vermiculite?

Do not disturb it. Have it tested; if it contains asbestos, an abatement contractor has to remove it.
