When Loose Fill Is the Smart Choice
Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass pumped through a hose into an attic or a wall cavity. Across an open attic floor it is usually the most affordable way to reach a high R-value, because it fills around trusses, wires and pipes without cutting and fitting. In older Green Bay homes it is also the way to fill walls that were built with nothing in them, without tearing off the siding or plaster.
Cellulose and fiberglass
HomeGuide rates loose cellulose at R-3.1 to R-3.8 per inch and blown fiberglass at R-2.2 to R-2.9. Cellulose is denser and resists air movement a little better; fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb water. Both work well when installed to the right depth over a sealed ceiling.
Dense-pack walls
For closed walls, we drill small holes, usually from outside behind a course of siding or from inside, and blow cellulose in at high density so it fills the cavity and does not settle. We check for knob-and-tube wiring first, because it should not be buried.
Air sealing comes with it
Loose fill does not stop air on its own. Before we blow an attic, we seal the bypasses through the ceiling, put up baffles at the eaves and insulate the hatch. That is listed on the quote so you know it is part of the work.

Depth, R-value, sealing and any patching listed in writing.

Blown-In Insulation Questions
How much does blown-in insulation cost?
HomeGuide lists blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot, and an attic at $900 to $3,600. Fixr's attic range for about 1,500 square feet is $1,750 to $5,500. We give you a written price after measuring.
Does blown-in insulation settle?
Loose fill settles a little over time, which is why we blow to the settled depth for the target R-value. Dense-packed walls are installed tight enough to resist settling.
Can you blow insulation into plaster walls?
Yes. We drill small holes, fill each cavity and patch. We check for wiring and fire blocking first.
Is blown-in cheaper than spray foam?
Per square foot, yes. Foam earns its cost in rim joists, walls and tight spaces where air sealing matters most.
